The Truth About Chloramines in Water
Putting chloramines in water has been man’s way of staving off infection from numerous waterborne diseases for more than a century now. The chlorine disinfection process was begun in order to stem the rising death toll from these illnesses during the late 1800’s. This process was very successful, and has saved many lives, or so it was thought.
While curbing the death rate from the parasites and bacteria in our waterways, this chemical disinfection process may have begun an epidemic of a different sort. While death’s due to the ingestion of waterborne pathogens dropped dramatically, the instances of cancer started to steadily climb. While the cancer rate in 1900 was 1 in every 50 people, today it is 1 in every 2.5.
Many scientists and medical professionals have stated that chloramines in water are directly to blame for this meteoric rise. It has been known for quite some time that these chemicals were carcinogenic in nature, but everyone including the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency believed that they were safe if humans were only exposed to them in small quantities.
What is considered to be a safe level for human exposure is 3 to 4 PPM. This supposedly safe level is often exceeded, and even during these times when there is too much of the carcinogen present in your water, service will not be interrupted. This is frightening, because if a public pool exceeds 4 PPM then by law it has to be shut down until the levels can be brought back to a reasonable level.
We cannot stop the use of chloramines in water, because as of yet we have not come up with a better alternative for removing the pathogens in our water supply. Something has to be done in order to protect us from the hurt that these chemicals can do. The only answer that we have is to buy and install a high quality home water purification system in order to block these chemicals out.
A excellent system will not only remove these disinfectant chemicals from your water, but will also prevent the transmission of toxic heavy metals, and of parasites and cysts that survive the disinfection process. What it is that you need is a system that incorporates 4 different filters designed to each pick up a specific set of toxins.
In order to eliminate the threat posed by chloramines in water and other hazardous chemical agents your system will have to include both an activated granular carbon filter, and a multi media block. These two filters will block 99% of the tens of thousands of chemical agents that could possibly be transmitted to your tap at any given time.
In order to remove the remaining waterborne pathogens your system should feature what is known as a sub micron filter. An ion exchange can do several things for you. It removes the traces of toxic heavy metals such as lead and copper, it injects electrolytes into your water that were lost during the municipal filtering process, and it maintains the pH of your water.
Chloramines in water do not have to affect you. Take the proper precautions, and you will remain safe from harm.
